Why do people hate on Edmonton so much?

I'm just curious... I was raised in Edmonton, moved here when I was two. I'm fourteen now. I haven't lived in another city before, except for a few vacations to Hong Kong here and there and a 4 day trip to Ottawa, so I haven't really experienced another city before.

I read some reviews and they said Edmontonians were rude, stupid, petty, etc. It made me wonder, 'citizens from certain cities have certain attitudes?' Doesn't every city have its fair share of polite, smart people and rude, ignorant *******? One person even said that Edmontonians are "perpetual complainers, and whiners, xenophobic, insecure, delusional..." and another said "opinionated, judgmental, and overbearing"

Plus the landmarks. There, I can understand why people don't like it. Malls are average, imo. Then again, I don't really like shopping much... Construction is always going on and then their deadlines are often delayed.

What are your thoughts/opinions?

i lived in edmonton for a year and to be honest, i could not take it ... the weather ... the winter was so brutal and cold, even outdoor winter activities were not enjoyable ... i saw an old woman who froze to DEATH sitting waiting for a bus ... and i had a great job, a nice place to live that was so cheap, but the weather was way too brutal for me to even consider staying there ... i did find the city easy to get around and it was super cheap to live there but that is due to the weather ... it is cheap because no one wants to live there ... i have also lived in jasper, ottawa, montreal, toronto, the united states (several states), and currently reside in vancouver ... i will not say vancouver is the best place on earth to live but when compared to edmonton it is like paradise and that is even with vancouver's pretty much year-round rain and lack of sunshine ... you are only fourteen, never truly experienced other cities and maybe when you do you will understand why edmonton sucks ... recently a scientist was offered TEN MILLION to move to edmonton and he declined ... i find edmonton is like a city of "canadian rednecks" which does not make for a nice city to live in ... alberta also has the highest suicide rate in canada too ...

I left Edmonton when I was 30. Three years after I was taken by a business associate to New York City. Until then I was satisfied with Edmonton. When I was 30 I moved to Vancouver. It was the winter weather that finally did me in.

When I was 49 I moved to Los Angeles and at age 59 I moved back to Vancouver to care for an elderly mother. I will likely be retiring to southern Nevada in about 4 years.

My point being is that eventually you start to chase warmer weather.

Otherwise, I found Edmonton to be a little "provincial" for me and not just big enough a city for my likes. Though I have no regrets living there when I grew up.

Edmonton is truly awful. I typed "vancouver sucks" into google to see people's thoughts, and this was the second search result. That's pretty bad.

hey just like Québec city, where I live , they also are : "perpetual complainers, and whiners, xenophobic, insecure, delusional..." and another said "opinionated, judgmental, and overbearing"

in the old days, Edmonton was a small town where nobody wanted to go. Times have changed and this city is now quite big and mixed with all type of people. I don't think there are more weirdos in Edmonton than anywhere else in Canada.

I lived in Edmonton for six long years and am suffering from social anxiety ever since. Edmontonians are xenophobic and insecure about immigrants stealing their jobs. I quit my job and moved to another city but cannot get out of the trauma of mobbing that I faced in Edmonton.

Edmonton is a nice city in the summer, avoiding the bad drivers and red necks with their trucks. This might be the only place in the world one can earn $100,000 with a grade 6 education based on employment in the oil industry. In the winter there is nothing to do but watch hockey and drink. I am not into either and find the city narrow minded and unbearable.

If I may, I'd like to borrow a famous line.

Watchoo talkin' bout willis?

Seriously, Edmonton? Nobody hates that town. I live in Waterloo, a 1-hour drive from Toronto, and I can assure you that Edmonton is not a hated place. Edmonton doesn't even make the top ten list, in fact. You want to know what the most hated cities in Canada are? Okay, I'll tell you...

TORONTO: Everyone hates Toronto, especially Torontonians. Seriously, most of the Toronto-haters live in Toronto. How can you not love to hate a city like that?

WINNIPEG: Yes, the closest thing to the center of Canada. Per capita, it's also the most violent city in North America.

VANCOUVER: Because of the hippies. Always with the friggin' hippies.

QUEBEC CITY: If it wasn't for the separatists, nobody would ever hate Quebec. But they're real, and so is the hate.

SUDBURY: That whole city just stinks.

CALGARY: Stephen Harper was born in Toronto, but is the MP for Calgary West. That makes Calgary a city we can all hate right there.

NIAGARA FALLS: Aside from Detroit, this is the ugliest city in all of North America.

HAMILTON: Proud that they're not part of Toronto, but that's the only thing they can be proud of. And that isn't really much.

BRANTFORD: People in Brantford wish they could be as cool as Buffalo. And Buffalo isn't cool.

REGINA: Bottom of the list. Any city that sounds like a smelly body part is always at the bottom of the list.

"Why do people hate on Edmonton so much?"

I live in Vancouver; I have never heard that sentiment... barring games against the Oilers, Eskimos, Flames and such. Damn them. And that Gretsky. Don't even get me started.

I'm a long suffering Canucks fan tired of my warcry being WE NEARLY WON THE STANLEY CUP ONCE JUST ABOUT !!!

But, I digress...

I got family in Rimbey and Lacombe, Alberta is cool... never heard a disparaging remark in all honest about Edmonton. Our Premier's are in a battle about the pipeline from the Tar Sands to the BC coast and forgive me but a pipeline and more oil tankers doesn't thrill me in the slightest but even 'current events' aren't anything I'd hold against an Albertan personally.

Even the redneck stereotype; I don't really even see that as a negative even pretending it's true... is being compared to Sam Steele or John Wayne a bad thing?

It's all good.

No more sports dynasties please though.

I completely agree with all of you. I went to school there (U. of Eh) in the late sixties. I am ashamed that that town is in Canada. Mordechai Richler described it as "Canada's service entrance". Live theatre stinks, too.

People always hate where they live and believe grass is greener the other side, don't they?

Don't worry. It's mainly easterners that think that. They think it's some sort of redneck hellhole, but who cares about those stupid easterners, they think their ѕhit don't stink.
